| Global supply and production chains are characterised by complex material flows and impacts on freshwater resources. Due to the increasing consumption and use of freshwater for different purposes conflicts on freshwater resources as well as increasing contamination of water bodies by pollutants such as chemicals from agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics or nanoparticles are of growing concern. Innovative concepts and theories, e.g. water footprint and virtual water trade, are important contributions to identify and discuss current risks and future challenges for adequate water management strategies. |
